Can anyone recommend me some cheesy or good romantic comedies / comedy films?

2020.09.25 10:49 BlueZky13 Can anyone recommend me some cheesy or good romantic comedies / comedy films?

For awhile now I've been just watching nothing but rom-coms and comedy films and have been loving everything I've watched so far but I feel like I'm running out of options, I need more suggestions!
So far I've watched;
What I really loved;
  • Bridesmaids. All these years later, still a masterpiece.
  • When Harry Met Sally
  • Pretty Woman
  • The Holiday & What Happens in Vegas - Cameron is fun.
  • 13 Going 30 (LOVED 13 going 30. Makes me wish there was more films like it.) Really liked Big too.
  • Forrest Gump.
  • Hot Tub Time Machine (I weirdly like the movies that go back in time, or future?)
  • Groundhog Day
  • Peggy Sue Got Married / It Could Happen To You (this one was super cheesy, but I strangely liked it.)
  • Notting Hill and most Hugh Grant films...
  • Bridget Jones / Renee is great.
  • Me, Myself & Irene
  • Jerry Maguire
There's so many more I'm not thinking about that I loved / have watched. BTW, sorry that my list is so long, I'm pathtic.
Any good comedies that are worth watching? Esp rom-coms?

2020.08.28 21:06 portlane Beverly Simmons (July 21, 1925 - August 19, 2020)

Beverly Marie McGilchrist Simmons
July 21, 1925 - August 19, 2020
Beverly Marie Simmons passed away peacefully on Aug. 19, 2020, in Portland, Oregon at the age of 95 from heart disease.
Beverly began her life in Salem, Ore., July 21, 1925 to Gordon and Marie (Bollinger) McGilchrist. She lived on McGilchrist Street with her parents and three older brothers, Gordon, Elton, and Stuart. Her Scottish grandparents lived next door and Beverly would have tea and scones with them every day after school. In 1943 she graduated from Salem High School and was regularly featured in the Salem newspaper for her many social activities. Her future husband, Bland Frank Simmons, moved to Salem in January, 1940. They met on a blind date their sophomore year of high school where they went ice skating, and as Bev often reminisced, Bland had to hold her up all night because of her weak ankles. It was a match made in heaven.
While in college she was a member Pi Beta Phi sorority where her room was the place to be for fun. She developed friendships which would be cherished over the course of her life time. On June 8, 1947 Beverly graduated from Oregon State College with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Secretarial Science. After Bland completed his service during the war, on Sept. 2, 1947 they married and began 72 happy years together.
Bev loved people and conversation and was a gracious loving wife, mother and friend. She enjoyed singing and playing the piano. Because she loved cooking and entertaining, at the age of 80 she printed a cookbook titled "Bev's Family Favorites." Playing cards with family and friends was one of the joys of her life. For many years she and Bland hosted an annual card tournament where they played Pitch at their home, starting with a three course dinner she had been preparing over several days. Bev played bridge once or twice a week into her later years. Beverly was also a member of PEO, and Broadmoor Women's Club where she helped compile two cookbooks, with proceeds going to philanthropic projects. She also volunteered at Albertina Restaurant, which funds Albertina Kerr Centers for Children.
Beverly is survived by her husband, Bland Simmons; her four children, Susan (Steven deceased) Neal, Steve (Anne) Simmons, Scott (Judy) Simmons, and Karen (Ron) Stark; her seven grandchildren, Erin (Steve) Cottingham, Shannon (Beau) Brinckerhoff, Meghan (Pam Murphy) Simmons, Lindsay (Kyle) Beveridge, Geoffrey (Megan) Simmons, Shane (Sarah) Simmons, Craig Simmons, and six great-grandchildren, Savannah, Camelia and Deacon Simmons, Flynn Simmons, William and Sydney Cottingham, Madeline Beveridge; and many nieces and nephews.
A private family service will be held at Finley Sunset Hills Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Village Ministries International at: www.villageministries.org

2020.08.07 14:58 prograft "The 100 Most Popular Sci-Fi Books on Goodreads" and a little more digging

I'm exactly one month late to this list (just found it in bobiverse):
The 100 Most Popular Sci-Fi Books on Goodreads
Unfortunately this list is not ready to be exported for further analysis. So I took some time to label the ranking into a big spreadsheet someone extracted from Goodreads in January (I think I got it from goodreads but I can't find the original post now - nor do I know if it's been updated recently). So keep in mind that the stats below are a little out of date.

Rating# (orange, left axis, LOG); Review# (grey, right axis, LOG); Avg Rating (blue, natural)

You can see from the diagram above, that the ranking is not strictly proportional to either #ratings or #reviews. My guess is that they are sorting entries by "views" instead, i.e. the back-end data of page views.
Here's a text based list - again, the data are as of Jan 2020, not now.
(can someone tell me how to copy a real table here - instead of paste it as an image?)
edit: thanks to diddum and MurphysLab. By combining their suggestions I can now make it :)

2020.08.01 16:58 PhillipCrawfordJr Did The Mafia Blackmail FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover About Being Gay?

M. Wesley Swearingen, an FBI agent from 1951 to 1977, writes in his memoir FBI Secrets: An Agent's Expose about the long-standing rumors within the Bureau concerning the relationship between FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and Associate Director Clyde Tolson which include allegations that Hoover ignored the Mafia for decades because the wise guys had incriminating goods on the supposed lovers:
One year after arriving in Memphis, Hoover transferred me to Chicago, Illinois. I was thrilled – my mind was full of gangsters, Tommy guns, and the FBI's famous machine gun battles of the 1930s. It was clear to me from Chicago's newspaper headlines that gangsters ruled a Chicago underworld element in the 1950s because gangland style murders averaged close to 100 a year in the Chicago area. * * * But when I told my colleague and veteran agent Vince Coll of my big plans for Chicago, he said that Hoover did not recognize the existence of a mob in Chicago. According to Coll, Mafia leader Meyer Lansky's organization had enough on Hoover and Tolson, as closet homosexuals, that Hoover would never investigate the mob.
The allegations were fleshed out in Official and Confidential: the Secret Life of J. Edgar Hoover by Anthony Summer. A review of the book ("Partners For Life") by Sidney Urquhart for Time magazine summarizes one alleged incident as follows:
Perhaps Summers' most bizarre revelation is an account provided by Susan Rosenstiel, the wife of a liquor distiller and gambling crony. Rosenstiel recalls attending what she thought would be an elegant private party at New York City's Plaza Hotel in the company of lawyer Roy Cohn, Hoover and others. Instead, Cohn introduced Rosenstiel to a woman named "Mary," dressed in a fluffy black dress, lace stockings and high heels. It was obvious Mary was no woman. "You could see where he shaved. It was Hoover," said Rosenstiel. Joined by Cohn, Hoover stripped down to a tiny garter belt and proceeded to have sex with two young boys. Cohn later joked about the evening. "That was really something, wasn't it, with Mary Hoover?"
The "two young boys" with whom Hoover allegedly had sex perhaps were provided by Ed "the Skull" Murphy who was a long-time Genovese associate involved in the crime family's gay bar and boy prostitution rackets in New York City. In Stonewall: The Riots That Sparked The Gay Revolution, David Carter writes:
John Paul Ranieri, a former prostitute interviewed for this history, provided critical testimony for corroborating and better understanding the larger implications of Murphy's criminal enterprises for gay history. Ranieri said that as a youth from Westchester County he had been forced by blackmail and Mafia-supplied drugs into a prostitution ring in which he remained active for three years before he escaped the mob's control. He claimed that a number of youths in the ring had disappeared after they got careless with talk, for while most of the customers were more or less average homosexual men with money, the regular clientele, according to Ranieri, also included famous men such as Malcolm Forbes, Cardinal Spellman, Liberace, U.S. Senators, a vice president of the United States, one of the most famous rock musicians, and J. Edgar Hoover. The mob's order, according to Ranieri, was strictly "Keep your zipper open and your mouth shut."
Ranieri said that he met J. Edgar Hoover at private parties at the Plaza Hotel and that Hoover's name was never mentioned. Hoover was always in drag, and Ranieri said he could tell that the FBI director was sure that no one recognized him. Ranieri said that he had ensured his own survival by having in his possession a photograph of himself with Hoover, given to him by the photographer.
How does the preceding information link Ed Murphy with J. Edgar Hoover? The connection is made evident in a news story written shortly after Hoover's homosexuality and transvestism became public. When [Anthony] Summer's book [Official and Confidential: The Secret Life of J. Edgar Hoover], was published [in 1993], a newspaper story about the 1960s national homosexual blackmail ring suddenly appeared after a quarter of a century of silence on the subject. Without mentioning Murphy's name, it quoted law enforcement sources who had worked on the case as saying that their investigation into the nationwide blackmail ring had turned up a photograph of Hoover "posing amiably" with the racket's ringleader and had uncovered information that Clyde Tolson, Hoover's lover, had himself "fallen victim to the extortion ring." After federal agents joined the investigation, both the photograph of Hoover and the documents about Tolson disappeared. * * * Very suggestive in this context is that Murphy would publicly say in 1978—before it became public information, as it did in the 1990s, that the Mafia had photographs of Hoover involved in sex acts—that he knew that J. Edgar Hoover "was one of my sisters."
Murphy's boys did have a habit of disappearing. For example, one Puerto Rican youth known as Tano with whom Murphy was sexually involved was kidnapped right off the streets never to be seen again according to one eyewitness to the incident as recounted by Carter in Stonewall.
Curiously, Murphy also was a long-standing FBI informant according to a May 8, 1978 article ("Skull Murphy: The Gay Double Agent") by Arthur Bell for The Village Voice. Indeed, this article contained the interview in which Murphy expressly speaks of J. Edgar Hoover as one of his "sisters": "He was the biggest fuckin' extortionist in this country. He had presidents by the balls. He had a record on everybody and his brother."
The allegations that Meyer Lansky had incriminating evidence against the FBI Director are particularly credible in light of the relationships among all the parties with political fixer Roy Cohn -- a fellow closet case who died of AIDS in 1986 -- at the center of it all.
Cohn was a personal friend of Hoover during the 1950s and 1960s, and the two shared extensive correspondence directed to each other on a first-name basis including a September 1957 exchange on an article published by the Director entitled "Let's Wipe Out the Schoolyard Sex Racket." Ironically, only months earlier an apparent obscenity indictment against Cohn had been dismissed according to an FBI memo dated June 28, 1957 from Assistant Director Louis B. Nichols to Clyde Tolson:
Roy Cohn called 6-27-57 to advise that Neil Gallagher of the New Jersey Turnpike Commission represented him in connection with the return of an indictment charging the sale of obscene literature. Gallagher went before the Superior Court judge in Union County, New Jersey, Thursday afternoon and moved the dismissal of the indictment. The district attorney joined him in this recommendation and issued a public apology to Cohn.
Cornelius "Neil" Gallagher later became a U.S. Congressman from Bayonne, NJ until he lost the seat in 1972 after Life magazine ran an article alleging mob ties.
The relationship between Hoover and Cohn is particularly troubling given that the FBI was fully aware that Cohn had ties to the most powerful bosses in the Mafia. For example, in 1964 federal prosecutor Robert Morgenthau was trying Cohn on corruption charges, and at the trial introduced excerpts of earlier grand jury testimony by Cohn. A March 27, 1964 article from The New York Times which the FBI contemporaneously clipped for its files on Cohn states:
The excerpts contained admissions by Mr. Cohn that he was acquainted with Geralde (Jerry) Catena, described by the Senate Rackets Committee as "No. 2 Man" in the Vito Genovese unit of the Cosa Nosta, and with Meyer Lansky, gangster. Mr. Cohn said he scarcely knew Lansky but that he had played golf two or three times with Catena.
Cohn further had represented the Stork Club which was Hoover's favorite stomping ground and Schenley Industries which was one of the country's largest liquor distillers. Louis Rosensteil was the president of Schenley Industries, and he had close ties to Meyer Lansky and Frank Costello. "In fact, on several occassions, Hoover was seen at the Stork Club fraternizing with people like Costello and Rosensteil" according to Peter J. Devico in The Mafia Made Easy. After Hoover's right-hand man Louis Nichols left the FBI in 1957, Cohn allegedly secured him a plum job making $100,000 a year at Schenley Industries although Nichols insisted in Hooveresque fashion that Rosensteil shunned the mob.
Of couse, the best evidence that Meyer Lansky had the goods on the FBI Director is that the storied agency never laid a hand on the gangster who was a bootleg kingpin during Prohibition, later founded Murder Inc., and finally ran gambling operations in Las Vegas and Havana, Cuba for the Genovese family. At the time of Lansky's death in 1983 the FBI estimated that he had a net worth of $300 million, and yet during his long criminal career the G-men never nailed him on a single charge or recovered a single penny. Indeed, the FBI did not even start a file on Lansky until the 1950s, and a review of the file's sparse contents illustrates that the agency's efforts to target him -- a purported top hoodlum -- were half-hearted at best involving little more than the occasional wiretap and a sometimes surveillance. Indeed, the newspaper articles on Lansky which the FBI clipped were more informative on the mobster's activities than the investigator reports. Ironically, Lansky only was arrested in 1972 -- the same year Hoover died -- as a result of an IRS investigation involving an alleged skimming scheme from a Vegas casino, and even that indictment conveniently was dismissed because Lansky was considered too ill to prosecute.

2020.07.23 13:59 PhillipCrawfordJr Was FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover Gay?

2020.07.01 17:00 Inkblot9 Conference changes for 2020–21

It's July 1st, and you know what that means: time for the annual conference changes list! Thanks to Sir_Superman for letting me take over this year, and for helping fill in some things I missed.
Schools with football (including those adding or dropping it) are in bold. Note that I'm not including schools that have canceled football or other fall sports for 2020, since those presumably are temporary changes.

Division I

Seven schools are in the process of reclassifying to Division I. Their projected completion dates (after which they become eligible for the postseason) are as follows:
Future changes: Bethune–Cookman and Florida A&M from MEAC to SWAC; North Carolina A&T from MEAC to Big South. St. Thomas (MN) is applying for a waiver to reclassify from Division III to Division I beginning in 2021; if this is accepted, UST will join the Summit League, but no football destination has been announced.

Division II

Six schools are in the process of joining Division II. Their projected completion dates (after which they become eligible for the postseason) are as follows:
Future changes: Anderson (SC) adding football (2024; South Atlantic); Ashland from GLIAC to GMAC (2021); Converse adding men’s sports (2021; Conference Carolinas); Francis Marion and UNC Pembroke from Peach Belt to Conference Carolinas (2021; UNCP football unaffected).

Division III

Several schools are in the process of joining Division III. Beginning with this year's entrants, the provisional membership process lasts only three years instead of four. However, under the old system it has been common for schools to obtain a waiver to skip a year (usually the third year). Because of that, these projected completion dates are tentative:
Manor is beginning an exploratory year and likely to enter provisional membership next year.
Future changes: Iowa Wesleyan from SLIAC (UMAC football) to NAIA (2021); Louisiana College from ASC to NAIA (2021); Macalester football from MWC to MIAC (2021); Mary Baldwin adding men’s sports (2021; USA South); Pine Manor is absorbed Boston College and drops sports (2021); St. Mary's (MD) from CAC to NEAC (2021); St. Norbert from MWC to NACC (2021); St. Scholastica from UMAC to MIAC (2021); St. Thomas (MN)from MIAC to likely Division I (2021); Southern Virginia from CAC (ODAC football) to USA South (2021).

NAIA

Future changes: Columbia (SC) adds men’s sports (2021); Iowa Wesleyan joins from D3 (no conference affiliation announced); Johnson & Wales (FL) closes (2021; currently in Sun Conference); Louisiana College joins from D3 (will likely join SSAC with football in the Sooner); Mount Marty adds football (2022; GPAC).

2020.06.26 10:29 aqua_zesty_man [Blade Runner] When Roy Batty says, "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate," he is talking about aliens.

The premise here is he's having traveled beyond where humans have ever been up to that time, possibly on a Tyrell ship, or maybe as a prisoner of an alien species who then escaped or was let free to return to Earth.
This is somewhat of an update to a fan-theory I have previously posted: https://www.reddit.com/FanTheories/comments/5pbs09/what_fan_theories_made_bad_or_mediocre_movies/dcqu9lg/, but now includes the Blade Runner movies via the above quote and because of other factors which we will outline shortly.
In a nutshell, I posit a Shared 'Grunge Tech' universe in which all of these franchise films or video games are part: Blade Runner 1 & 2; Alien 1 through 4, Prometheus, Alien: Covenant, and associated video games; Predator 1 through 4 and associated video games; AVP 1 & 2 and associated video games; RoboCop 1 through 3 (but not the 2014 remake); and the movies Total Recall (1990), Outland (1981), and Leviathan (1989).
By Grunge Tech, I mean the aesthetic that makes it appear that Apple, Inc dominated the field of computing aesthetics and ergonomics and then got complacent and sloppy, turning everything into a dull, dreary monochrome color scheme, including maintaining 1970s-style computer readouts for the next couple hundred years.
Blade Runner was set in 2019, with a real-world release date of 1982. In that reality, there's flying cars, programmable people, and interplanetary travel. But it seems rather incredible humans gained not only easy interplanetary travel but picked up FTL early enough to be able to have wars being fought for or against an interstellar empire in just thirty-seven years.
When Roy Batty says "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe," he's not just addressing Deckard or Gaff, but all humans. I think he has had contact with aliens who own those attack ships or know who does. He's been beyond the human sphere.
This makes more sense if we look at the easter egg mentioned in the article "25 Movie Details That Even Die Hard Fans Confessed To Miss" (www.thepopple.com/famous-movie-details-you-probably-missed-69119):
"A lot of you might have noticed that computer interface used in *Alien (1979), the same interface is used in Blade Runner (1982). Because of this many fans believe that both the stories take place in the same universe. // When director Ridley Scott created Alien Covenant in 2017, he kept the trend alive."*
Then there's videos like this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hqaqQ4Mb38) which detail various similarities in Ridley Scott's filmmaking with the Blade Runner and Alien franchises. If they belong in the same universe, that's well and good, but Xenomorphs don't have a spacefaring civilization. They more or less get spread the universe by other species to be studied (humans), used as weapons (humans), or used as prey (Predators).
Which brings us to the Aliens vs. Predator spinoffs. If the Aliens movies are part of this universe, then so are the AVP movies and the video games that assume the shared universe, the Aliens: Colonial Marines video game, and the four Predator movies. Those movies allow for lots of things that need to be accounted for:
Now Replicants are programmed meta-humans, basically an engineered subspecies of human as a permanent underclass held in perpetual corporate bondage. Human programming seems like an even stranger development to have occurred in as few as three decades. But if you'll allow the indulgence, if we add the RoboCop movies and Total Recall to the shared universe:
All these movies present a 'grunge tech' look (albeit limited by 1970s and 1980s-era set dressing) which, combined with routine mega-corporate malfeasance and the treatment of employees and underlings more as slaves and disposable assets rather than real people with rights, presents a fairly coherent dystopia where the strong control the weak (whether that's Predators vs. Xenomorphs, or humans vs. Replicants and Synthetics, or corporations vs. colonists).
There are several other links we could make between the source materials of this shared universe:
BLADE RUNNER + ALIEN:
"In developing his character [David for Prometheus], Fassbender avoided watching the android characters of Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), and instead studied the replicants in Scott's 1982 science fiction film Blade Runner, with a focus on Sean Young's character Rachael, whose "vacancy" and longing for a soul interested him." (Wikipedia: Sciretta, Peter (June 8, 2012). "Interview: Michael Fassbender Talks 'Prometheus'". /Film. Archived from the original on June 16, 2012. Retrieved June 9, 2012.) --from one of the wikis.
ALIEN + PREDATOR:
ROBOCOP:
TOTAL RECALL:
OUTLAND:
LEVIATHAN:
MISCELLANEOUS:
This one isn't really a crossover item, but I wanted to include it anyway: Royce (Adrien Brody, Predator 3) and Ramirez (Richard Chaves, Predator 1) have such an uncanny resemblance to each other that I had to make sure they were not the same actor. These two characters might be related too. Suppose the Predators had collected Ramirez’s genetic signature, happened to locate another military member of his family that was a partial match on their prey database, and that’s why they picked Royce?
Lastly, the way the human body reacts to negligible atmospheric pressure in this universe is slightly off from real life. When the human body is exposed to low air pressure or hard vacuum, it bloats like crazy and eventually explodes. This happens in both Total Recall and Outland. This is really the fault of bad understanding on the writers' part of how the human body behaves in a hard vacuum, but since the same notable mistake happens twice, I'm including it here.
REFERENCES:
EDITED TO ADD: I did some reorganization of the many, many links between the different films and video games that make up this shared universe, to bring a little order to what began as a rather disorderly exposition.

2020.06.11 20:43 mikiagrawal1 Stop Using Toilet Paper

Stop Using Toilet Paper
Why are we hoarding it when experts agree that rinsing with water is more sanitary and environmentally sound?
Originally Published on The New York Times by Kate Murphy April 3, 2020
In 1891, Seth Wheeler patented rolled and perforated toilet paper.Credit...Seth Wheeler
While the coronavirus pandemic is affecting us all differently depending on where we live, our financial situation and our basic health, one universal is the difficulty finding toilet paper.
Panic buying of toilet paper has spread around the globe as rapidly as the virus, even though there have been no disruptions in supply and the symptoms of Covid-19 are primarily respiratory, not gastrointestinal. In many stores, you can still readily find food, but nothing to wipe yourself once it’s fully digested.
This is all the more puzzling when you consider that toilet paper is an antiquated technology that infectious disease and colorectal specialists say is neither efficient nor hygienic. Indeed, it dates back at least as far as the sixth century, when a Chinese scholar wrote that he “dared not” use paper from certain classical texts for “toilet purposes.”
Before paper was invented, or readily available, people used leaves, seashells, fur pelts and corn cobs. The ancient Greeks and Romans used small ceramic disks and also sponges on the ends of sticks, which were then plunged into a bucket of vinegar or salt water for the next person to use. We know this thanks to Philippe Charlier, a forensic anthropologist and archaeologist at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris. His 2012 treatise, “Toilet Hygiene in the Classical Era,” published in the British Medical Journal, is perhaps the most widely cited text on the topic.
Dr. Charlier’s specialty is microscopically analyzing coprolite, fossilized feces. “It’s not sexy,” he said, “but when you study poo from 2000 B.C. you can get a lot of information about alimentation, digestion, health, genetics and migration of populations.” You also find out what people used to clean their posteriors. Archaeologists examining coprolite from this year centuries hence might be perplexed to find remnants of magazines and newspapers, which people have reportedly been using during the current toilet paper shortage.
Most toilet paper historians (there are more than you would think) credit Seth Wheeler with inventing modern toilet paper, perforated and on a roll, an idea he patented in 1891. The diagram on the patent application should put to rest any arguments about how to load the roll: The flap comes over the top and down the front. While manufacturers might have added dyes, prints, perfumes and soothing aloe, toilet paper has remained pretty much the same ever since.
That is, unless you count the introduction of wet wipes. Originally intended for babies, they are now marketed aggressively to adults with gender specific brands like Dude-Wipes and Queen V. Sales reached $1.1 billion worldwide last year, up 35 percent from five years ago, according to Euromonitor International. The unfortunate result is that the wipes have begun to coalesce with grease in city sewer systems to form blockages the size of airliners.
All this when experts agree that rinsing yourself with water is infinitely more sanitary and environmentally sound. Dr. H. Randolph Bailey, a colorectal surgeon at the University of Texas McGovern Medical School in Houston, recommended bidets or toilet attachments, such as the Washlet or Tushy.
“A lot of people who come to see me have fairly significant irritation of their bottoms,” he said. “Most of the time it has to do with overzealous cleaning” — wiping too vigorously with toilet paper or using wipes, which often contain harsh fragrances and chemicals.
Moreover, he said, you’re just never going to get as clean as rinsing with water. Cleanliness matters, since you can get seriously ill from diseases transmitted via feces. Cholera, hepatitis, and E. coli and urinary tract infections are prime examples. Recent studies have found coronavirus in feces, as well.
But while the majority of households in Japan have high-tech toilets capable of cleansing users with precisely directed temperature-controlled streams of water, the rest of the world has been slow to follow.
Blame prudishness and puritanism, at least in part: Bidets, once ubiquitous in France, became associated with hedonism and licentiousness. Marie Antoinette had a red-trimmed bidet in her prison cell while awaiting the guillotine. And during World War II, American soldiers first saw bidets in French brothels, which made them think they were naughty. An often-told joke was that a wealthy American tourist in Paris assumed the bidet in her hotel room was for washing babies in, until the maid told her, “No, madame, this is to wash the babies out.”
But even in France, toilet paper has taken over. “Now, when constructing a new flat, nobody puts a bidet in it,” Dr. Charlier said. “There’s not room for it, particularly in Paris.” Although, when the bidet is incorporated in the toilet, as modern versions are, space is a nonissue. “Maybe there are also psychological reasons we do not embrace the newer technology,” he said.
Which brings us back to the panic buying of toilet paper. Psychologists say it’s more than a little Freudian, what with the anal personality being tied to a need for order, hoarding and fear of contamination. “The characteristics align with obsessive compulsive tendencies, which get triggered when people feel threatened,” said Nick Haslam, a professor of psychology at the University of Melbourne in Australia and the author of “Psychology in the Bathroom.”
Many people are low-level paper hoarders even in the best of times — stuffing takeout menus in kitchen drawers and piling months-old magazines on coffee tables. The pandemic may have just kicked this tendency into high gear, and people are likely latching onto toilet paper because it’s subconsciously associated with controlling filth and disease. “There’s also some evidence that animals hoard nesting materials,” Dr. Haslam said. “So maybe toilet paper has some sort of nesting component as we’re forced into our homes.”
It could also be that, having given up so much of our freedom, some feel, albeit subconsciously, that going without toilet paper would be an indignity too far — a “Mad Max” descent into the realm of the uncivilized. And so, stockpiling of Charmin and Angel Soft will likely continue, even though there are far better ways to clean ourselves and despite environmental groups’ warnings that we’re flushing away our forests. No one wants to get caught without a roll within reach.

2020.05.11 15:44 rusticgorilla Lost in the Sauce: National reopen hearing derailed with 4 in quarantine

Welcome to Lost in the Sauce, keeping you caught up on political and legal news that often gets buried in distractions and theater… or a global health crisis.
TLDR pinned at top of comments
Housekeeping:

Loyalists taking over

Under the cover of a pandemic, the Trump administration is continuing to purge those who are deemed “disloyal” to the president and install individuals willing to advance Trump’s agenda.

Intelligence community

At the beginning of April, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) sent a letter to acting-Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Ric Grenell warning that high-level staff changes within the intelligence community should not be made until a permanent director is in place:
"Congress has neither authorized organizational changes at ODNI, nor appropriated funds for that purpose...The committee is concerned, moreover, by the removal or departure of every Senate-confirmed official at ODNI, as well as of other senior officials across ODNI's leadership team, including [National Counterterrorism Center] Acting Director Russell Travers and Acting Deputy Director Peter Hall."
Both leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee - Chairman Richard Burr (R-NC) and Vice Chairman Mark Warner (D-VA) - also sent a letter to Grenell insisting that Congress be consulted on any personnel changes.
However, Grenell responded to Schiff’s letter with his own, refusing to provide any information about personnel changes and accusing Schiff of over-extending his committee’s mandate. Grenell likewise did not comply with the Senate’s request for more information.
On Friday, Grenell continued reorganizing the ODNI, eliminating the Directorate of National Security Partnerships and folding its functions into other offices. The directorate coordinates between civilian and defense intelligence agencies. Four separate cyber-focused organizations will be consolidated into a single entity called the IC Cyber Executive, which Grenell says will “provide a single ODNI focus point for the cyber mission, which will strengthen the IC’s cyber posture to better defend U.S. national security interests.”
As part of the reorganization, a top career official was pushed out of her position. Deirdre Walsh spent more than 10 years at ODNI, most recently as chief operating officer. It is unclear who will replace her. Nick Ciarlante, a former staffer to Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), recently joined ODNI to serve as a deputy to the COO; he started his job there the same week Walsh was dismissed.
  • Reminder: ODNI has seen a wave of senior departures over the last year, including principal deputy director Sue Gordon; Joseph Maguire, Grenell's predecessor as acting director; principal executive Andrew Hallman; general counsel Jason Klitenic; chief of staff Viraj Mirani; and Intelligence Community Inspector General Michael Atkinson, who was fired by the president.

Pandemic officials

Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer, once in charge of the National Security Council’s pandemic team (before Trump and Bolton disbanded it in 2018), is leaving the administration. He announced his decision to retire from the U.S. Agency for International Development effective June 5. Ziemer is described as “an authoritative voice on health and disaster issues who was advising others more directly involved in the overall Trump administration response.”
USAID recently acquired a new acting administrator, John Barsa, and there have been some leadership changes as a result. Ziemer, who did not respond to a request for comment, may have felt it was a natural time to depart.
Note that Barsa was a member of Trump’s 2016 campaign and transition team.
Additionally, White House Domestic Policy Council head and coronavirus task force member Joe Grogan, who’s been very involved in the administration’s coronavirus response, is leaving his post on May 24. FEMA is also losing an official with a key role during the pandemic: Josh Dozor, deputy assistant administrator for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s response group and a 13-year FEMA veteran, is expected to leave the administration in the next few weeks.

Installing loyalists

The nomination of Rep. John Ratcliffe to lead the ODNI is the most well-known example of a Trump-loyalist recently put into power, but there have been many others. In case you missed it, despite being massively unqualified for the job, it appears that Ratcliffe is likely to be confirmed - especially after Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) came out in favor.
Sen. Mark Warner: “I don't see what has changed since last summer when the president decided not to proceed with your nomination over concerns about your inexperience, partisanship, and past statements that seemed to embellish your record." (video
US Postal Service: Louis DeJoy, a top donor to Trump and the RNC, is the new head of the Post office - at a time when Trump is trying to force the service to renegotiate its terms with companies (like Amazon) and its own union workforce. DeJoy was confirmed by the Postal Service’s board of governors, which currently has the minimum number of members for a quorum after Republicans in the Senate denied Obama the opportunity to appoint members for the last three years of his term.
Rep. Gerald E. Connolly (D-Va.), chairman of the House subcommittee that oversees the Postal Service, denounced the move as a reward by Trump to a “partisan donor.” … “The Postal Service is in crisis and needs real leadership and someone with knowledge of the issues,” Connolly said. “This crony doesn’t cut it.”
Voice of America: Trump has railed against Voice of America, the U.S. government’s non-military, external broadcasting arm, for its coverage of the coronavirus - which has not been as harsh on China as conservatives would like. VOA is part of the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), an independent agency that aims to "inform, engage, and connect people around the world in support of freedom and democracy." Trump has used his criticism of VOA to push the Senate to finally confirm his pick to lead USAGM: Michael Pack, a close ally of Stephen K. Bannon’s and a favorite of conservative activists.
“If you hear what’s coming out of the Voice of America, it’s disgusting,” Trump said. “The things they say are disgusting toward our country. And Michael Pack would get in and do a great job.”
Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair Jim Risch (R-ID) has scheduled a hearing on Thursday this week to advance Pack’s nomination. Democrats on the panel say Pack is not fit to lead the agency due to evidence that he has been funding his own private film company with donations from a nonprofit that he runs.
  • Note: USAGM used to be run by a bipartisan board with nine members. However, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017 did away with the board and gave the President the power to nominate a single CEO to lead the agency.
ICE appointees: Acting-Director of ICE Matthew Albence is reportedly resisting an effort by the White House to install multiple political appointees at the immigration agency. The candidates were chosen by White House Presidential Personnel Office chief John McEntee, the 29-year-old former campaign staffer in charge of installing Trump-loyalists across the federal government.
The director’s defenders say he opposed efforts to install the White House’s picks because they didn’t have enough law enforcement experience and weren’t qualified for the roles available. Some did have connections to the 2016 Trump campaign for which McEntee was Donald Trump’s body man and has been drawing people to fill jobs in the administration.
Defense purge: A White House loyalist is being sent (non-paywalled) to the Defense Department to “serve in a behind-the-scenes role vetting Defense Department officials for loyalty to the president.” Michael Cutrone previously served as Vice President Mike Pence’s top national security aide for South Asia.
“[Trump] is pushing to replace and remove civilians in OSD that are not aligned with the White House,” one current senior administration official told Foreign Policy of Cutrone’s plans to reshuffle officials in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. “Esper has no say in who the key people are going into senior positions.”

What is Congress up to?

The Senate returned to DC last week and focused on Sen. Mitch McConnell’s priorities: ramming through controversial nominations. Republicans and the White House say it is too early to consider additional coronavirus relief for the nation: “We’ve kind of paused as far as formal negotiations go,” White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said. McConnell echoed the sentiment, saying “we ought to take a pause here, do a good job of evaluating what we've already done.”
  • House Democrats could bring their version of CARES 2 to the floor for a vote this week. It is a $1.2 trillion+ package that is largely made up of aid to state and local governments. The remainder is funding for hospitals, for COVID-19 testing, for unemployment insurance, and for another round of direct payments to Americans. Additionally, the bill includes $25 billion to keep the USPS afloat.
  • Three Democratic senators have revealed legislation to send Americans at least $2,000 a month until the coronavirus crisis subsides, called the Monthly Economic Crisis Support Act.
  • White House advisors are worried that the federal government is spending too much to assist the nation through the pandemic. WaPo reports that some officials are considering allowing Americans to get cash immediately in exchange for curbing their Social Security benefits.
  • Trump said he won't support another round of coronavirus stimulus legislation unless it includes a payroll tax cut. "I want to see a payroll tax cut on both sides, a very strong one, because that’s going to really put people to work...And I told Steve just today, we’re not doing anything unless we get a payroll tax cut. That is so important to the success of our country," (video). Payroll taxes are withheld from workers’ wages and are used to fund government programs, such as Social Security and Medicare.

Exposed to virus

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing on Tuesday with the nation’s top officials in charge of that coronavirus response: Dr. Anthony Fauci (NIH), Dr. Brett Girior (HHS), Dr. Robert Redfield (CDC), and Dr. Stephen Hahn (FDA). Notably, all four plus the committee’s chairman, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN), will appear remotely after being exposed to the coronavirus.
In other words, a hearing on how to safely reopen the economy is too unsafe for in-person attendance. If the White House, with its ability to test everyone daily and conduct contact tracing, is experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks, it's absurd to expect Americans to return to work when we don't have 1/100th of the testing capacity. More here.

House Intelligence Cmte transcripts

The House Intelligence Committee released thousands of pages of transcripts of over 50 closed door interviews conducted in 2017 and 2018 related to the Russia investigation. The interviews include Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, Corey Lewandowski, Hope Hicks, Brad Parscale, and Carter Page, as well as Obama-era officials James Clapper, Sally Yates, Susan Rice, Ben Rhodes, Andrew McCabe, and Loretta Lynch.
Overall, there is nothing particularly ground-breaking in the transcripts. The main story about the release is the months-long battle between Chairman Adam Schiff and the Trump administration, which delayed the publication significantly. The White House insisted that it be able to review the transcripts first, but Schiff refused. Rightwing media, including Trump himself, inaccurately portrayed the delay as Schiff’s fault, saying he was trying to hide something.
A couple of nuggets:
  • Hope Hicks told lawmakers that senior Trump-world figures worried Paul Manafort was stealing money from the Trump campaign. She also refused to answer questions about Trump and associates asking her to lie, giving the impression that, yes, he did.
  • In his House Intel interview, Michael Cohen repeatedly tripped over the date he terminated the Trump Tower Moscow effort. "Sorry. I don't know what it is with me and dates today." He later pleaded guilty to lying about that date.
  • Kushner admitted to proposing a Flynn set up a back-channel of communications with then-Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak, but claimed the idea was ultimately turned down by Kislyak. “There's nothing wrong with giving an idea that is wrong, because, you know, if you do something that's wrong, then that's something that you have to look at,” Kushner told the committee in his own defense.

Biden probe

The chairmen of the Senate Homeland Security and Senate Finance Committee, Ron Johnson (R-WI) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA), are continuing to pursue their investigation into Joe and Hunter Biden. Finance Cmte Ranking Member Ron Wyden (D-OR) accuses the State Department of complying only with Republican requests for documents related to the probe, saying that he department has provided Senate Republicans with more than 4,000 pages of records - including 1,000 pages in the midst of the pandemic.
“It is wholly inappropriate for the State Department to dedicate its limited resources to voluntarily complying with Republican requests without also making a good faith effort to respond to Democratic requests,” Wyden wrote in the letter.
On April 30, Johnson and Grassley requested additional documents from the State Dept.
Obama’s take
Late last year, Johnson and Grassley requested Obama-era information from the National Archives and Records Administration regarding Ukraine and the Bidens. Obama’s office responded by warning that the GOP-led panel is an effort “to give credence to a Russian disinformation campaign.” The letter continues, “It arises out of efforts by some, actively supported by Russia, to shift the blame for Russian interference in the 2016 election to Ukraine.”
Obama’s office ultimately agreed to release the records “in the interest of countering the misinformation campaign underlying this request.”

Fallout from Flynn

During an interview following the DOJ’s decision to drop all charges against Michael Flynn, Attorney General Bill Barr further degraded the reputation of the department that’s supposed to dispense justice in the nation:
Reporter Catherine Herridge: How will history look back on your decision to drop charges against Flynn?
Barr: “Well, history is written by the winners. So it largely depends on who’s writing the history.” (video)
In other words, if Trump wins re-election, if Republicans control the government, he will be hailed as a hero for dropping the case. As Sen. Christ Murphy (D-CT), said: “My god. The entire idea of the rule of law - that thing the Attorney General is supposed to be in charge of upholding - is predicated on the outcome of elections NOT mattering when it comes to the operation of the legal system.”

Obama in crosshairs

On Friday, audio of Obama speaking during a private web chat conversation with members of the Obama Alumni Association was published by Yahoo News’ Michael Isikoff. Obama told members that dropping charges against Flynn jeopardizes the “rule of law.”
“The news over the last 24 hours I think has been somewhat downplayed — about the Justice Department dropping charges against Michael Flynn...And the fact that there is no precedent that anybody can find for someone who has been charged with perjury just getting off scot-free. That’s the kind of stuff where you begin to get worried that basic — not just institutional norms — but our basic understanding of rule of law is at risk. And when you start moving in those directions, it can accelerate pretty quickly as we’ve seen in other places.”
Obama also slammed Trump’s response to the pandemic as an “absolute chaotic disaster.” Of course, this enraged Trump, who took to Twitter on Mother’s Day to tweet and retweet catch-phrase criticisms like “OBAMAGATE,” which refers to conspiracy theories that Obama and his staff faked charges against Flynn and, ultimately, that the entire Russia investigation is a hoax.
Even before audio of Obama surfaced, Trump was on this track, telling Fox News:
"What you've seen so far is incredible, especially as it relates to President Obama, because if anyone thinks that he and sleepy Joe Biden didn't know what was going on, they have another thing coming." (video)

Putin must be happy

On the same day that the DOJ dropped its case against Flynn, Trump held another phone call with Vladimir Putin, in which he called the Russia investigation a “hoax:”
"The Russia hoax made it very hard for Russia and the United States to deal with each other...and we discussed that. I said, 'You know, it's a very appropriate time, because things are falling out now and coming in line showing what a hoax this whole investigation was, it was a total disgrace, and I wouldn't be surprised if you see a lot of things happen over the next number of weeks.’ This is just one piece of a very dishonest puzzle,” Trump told reporters after the call. (video)

Barr ally Tim Shea extensively cited testimony from former DOJ official Mary McCord in the filing asking to drop the Flynn case. McCord published an op-ed in NYT disavowing essentially everything that Barr and Shea claimed about her testimony, point by point.
NEW: Jonathan Kravis, a prosecutor on the Roger Stone case who quit his job over AG Barr’s interference, speaks out for the first time: "I am convinced that the department’s conduct in the Stone and Flynn cases will do lasting damage to the institution... [Barr’s decision] t sends an unmistakable message to prosecutors and agents — if the president demands, we will throw you under the bus."

Court cases

  • Tomorrow, May 12, the Supreme Court will live stream arguments in three cases about Trump’s finances. Both the House and Trump’s lawyers argued in filings last week that the court has the ability to rule on issues of the case, urging the justices not to punt the dispute back to lower courts.
  • Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts has rejected (doc) a request for an investigation into the retirement of an appeals court judge that created a coveted vacancy for President Trump to fill months before the 2020 election. D.C. Circuit Chief Judge Sri Srinivasan requested the probe after it was reported that Sen. McConnell was urging veteran conservative judges to retire this year so that Trump could replace them with ideological allies before the election.
  • As expected, the Supreme Court put a temporary hold on the release of Mueller grand jury materials to the House while it decides whether to issue a longer stay and take the case. Both the district court and appeals court have ruled against the Justice Department.
  • Last week, the Supreme Court unanimously threw out fraud convictions on Thursday against two New Jersey officials involved in the "Bridgegate" political scandal, the George Washington Bridge traffic jam that rocked the administration of then-Gov. Chris Christie… The ruling is the latest example of the court narrowing the type of conduct by public officials that can be considered fraud under federal law.

  • The Supreme Court heard arguments in a case concerning the Affordable Care Act's requirement that employer-provided health insurance plans cover birth control as a preventive service and pits supporters of the Obamacare provision against those who say it violates their religious and moral beliefs. Justice Ginsberg repeatedly pressed on the notion that women would lose their coverage even if they didn't share the employers' religious beliefs.

  • Don’t miss this amazing Reuters piece on qualified immunity, a legal defense enabled by the Supreme Court that allows cops to evade accountability in excessive force cases: “For cops who kill, special Supreme Court protection. The U.S. high court’s continual refinement of an obscure legal doctrine has made it harder to hold police accountable when accused of using excessive force.”

Trump properties

  • Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club is in the midst of a local legal battle over the president’s desire to have a private dock at the Palm Beach club.
    • More details: His neighbors and preservationists, who have pushed back on the plan, recently came upon new legal grounds to deny the dock: Trump agreed in writing years ago to change the use of the Mar-a-Lago property from a single-family residence to a private club owned by a corporation he controls. However, the president recently changed his official domicile from Manhattan to Mar-a-Lago, registering to vote in Florida using the club’s address. The property is taxed as a private club — not as a residence: “It’s one or the other — it’s a club or it’s your home.”
  • CREW: In February, President Trump traveled to the West Coast for a multi-day trip through four states. But instead of staying locally, President Trump traveled each evening to the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, likely costing taxpayers an extra million dollars. When he was asked about the wasteful and costly travel, President Trump blamed the Secret Service. Earlier this week, CREW received an email from the Department of Homeland Security saying no such records exist.
  • The House Oversight Committee is investigating the Trump Organization’s recent request for financial benefits from domestic and foreign government entities during the wake of the coronavirus crisis.
  • On Sunday, Trump used his official Twitter account to promote his Los Angeles golf course reopening.

Trump campaign

  • The Trump campaign has not returned an illegal donation it received from a foreign national in 2019, records from the FEC show. A PAC, Trump Victory, gave the foreign donor the money back, but the donation is still in the Trump campaign coffers: “Trump Victory appears to have covered a refund to the Trump campaign's only known foreign donor on behalf of the campaign in a possible attempt to shield it from allegations of wrongdoing — while at the same time leaving it in possession of the illicit funds.”
  • Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale has already collected $38.9 million through his companies from Trump’s various reelection committees between January 2017 and the end of March
  • Trump’s political team has begun discussions about organizing a high-dollar, in-person fundraiser next month, as well as preliminary planning about staging rallies and what sort of screenings might be necessary.
  • An investor group aligned with Don Jr. is about to acquire a major stake in One America News Network (OANN), which pushes conspiracy theories and unabashed pro-Trump content.

Immigration news

  • “U.S. suspends protections for migrant kids at border, expelling hundreds amid pandemic,” CBS
  • President Trump is once more pushing to have his border wall painted black, a design change that is projected to add at least $500 million in costs… military commanders and border officials believed as recently as last fall that they had finally talked him out of it… Trump has not let go of the idea, insisting that the dark color will enhance its forbidding appearance and leave the steel too hot to touch during summer months.
    • Cost estimates range from $1.2 million per mile to apply two coats of acrylic paint, all the way up to $6.8M per mile for fancy "powder coating" used on automobiles and appliances.
    • Keep in mind that Congress still hasn’t appropriated any money for wall construction, so this amounts to an additional half-billion dollars Trump will “steal” from other federal programs under his emergency powers.
  • The Trump administration is suing an orphanage in South Texas in order to exercise its eminent domain powers and obtain temporary access to the property to plan for construction along the border with Mexico.
    • Kushner expressed frustration at the pace of land acquisition in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, where the Trump administration is preparing to seize hundreds of parcels of private land from owners who have refused to sell.
